What Are the North and South Lunar Nodes?#

In astrology, another element as important as the planets is the set of mathematical points that are invisible in the sky yet carry profound meaning, namely the Lunar Nodes. One of these is the North Node (True Node), and the other is the South Node.

• North Node of the Moon describes the direction in which you are meant to grow, learn, and progress in this lifetime. In other words, it is the compass of your spiritual evolution. It shows in which areas you need to develop yourself and which experiences will help you mature and expand.
• South Node of the Moonrepresents the comfort zone you carry over from past lives or ingrained habits. This is where you feel safe, because you know this territory very well. Yet remaining here holds back your spiritual and personal evolution.

These two points complement one another. While the South Node whispers, “this is the realm you already know,” the North Node gently urges, “step out of your comfort zone and walk the path of your soul’s evolution.”

How Are Lunar Nodes Calculated?#

The Lunar Nodes are not actual celestial bodies in the sky. They are the points where the Moon’s orbit intersects the Sun’s path (the ecliptic). One of these intersection points lies in the north, and the other in the south.

When your date, time, and place of birth are entered, the exact zodiac signs and houses of these points are calculated. In this way, we can see which energies the Lunar Nodes carry in your chart.

In astrology, there are two different methods:

• North Node in Cancer means you are called to move toward more emotional, nurturing, and family-oriented themes. Since your South Node is in Capricorn, you need to learn to move away from excessive control and a mindset focused solely on achievement.
• North Node in Aries indicates that themes of individuality, courage, and forging your own path come to the forefront. Since the South Node is in Libra, you are called to move away from the tendency to be overly dependent on others.

In each zodiac sign, the North Node brings a different lesson. For some, it teaches the development of communication skills; for others, it calls for a turn toward freedom; and for others still, it guides them to become more active within their community.
