Hello! I am astrologer Diana.
There is something I have noticed over the years in my sessions with clients: At major turning points in life, a voice rises from within asking, “In which direction should I grow now?” Sometimes it happens when you are changing your job, sometimes when you keep repeating the same cycles in relationships, and sometimes when you are left standing with the question, “Who do I actually want to be?” In those very moments, there is a point in the chart that guides you almost like a beacon: True Node, that is, North Node (True Node).
In this article, I will approach the True Node not merely as a technical term, but as a living symbol that describes your karmic direction, the field of your spiritual growth, and the doorway that opens when you step out of your comfort zone, as well as show how to calculate your chart on Astroappy, how to interpret the information you find, and how to work with your True Node in daily life, step by step. If you are ready, let us read together the note the sky has written for you. From here, you can quickly calculate your birth chart.
What exactly is the True Node? From astronomy to symbol#
The True Node is the northern intersection point where the Moon’s orbit around Earth crosses the Sun’s apparent path (the ecliptic). It isn’t a “planet” in the sky—it’s a mathematical point. We also call it the North Lunar Node. The point directly opposite it is the South Lunar Node.
These two points are always 180° apart in your chart, forming an axis.
So why is it so important? Because on the symbolic level, the South Node describes the habits we bring with us, our natural inclinations, the safe zone where we say, “I already know how to do this well.” The North Node (True Node) on the other hand, is the call of the soul: “Look, true growth is here. This is your direction.” The southern side is familiar, it even grants talent; yet if we stay there for too long, we experience saturation and stagnation. The northern side may seem intimidating at first, because it asks you to develop new muscles, to learn a new attitude. But with every step, you feel life becoming more vibrant, your inner energy increasing, and your sense of meaning deepening.
True Node = North Lunar Node (How is it different from the Mean Node?)#
In astrology software you will sometimes see two different “Node” options:True Node and Mean Node. Mean Node is a mathematical approach based on the average (corrected) motion of the nodes. True Node on the other hand takes into account the actual oscillation of the nodes and corresponds to a position that is astronomically more precise. Most modern astrologers (myself included) use the True Node in spiritual work and consultations, because symbolically it is closer to the “true flow of life.” In short:
True Node = North Lunar Node = True Node.
What does my “True Node sign” say?#
The sign where the True Node is located in your chart sign indicates the attitudes you are meant to learn in this lifetime; the house it occupies shows in which area of life you need to develop these attitudes.
- Zodiac sign = “How?” (what character, what qualities, what state of mind)
- House= “Where?” (relationship, career, family, education, travel, visible success, inner world, etc.)
For example, if the True Node is in Gemini, the key to growth is to establish a balance between learning and teaching, to stay curious, to communicate, to soften the dogmatic Sagittarius side that says “I know.” and instead say “Let’s ask, let’s talk, let’s share.” If the True Node is in Capricorn, it is a calling to take responsibility, to build structure, to manage time, to make your goals concrete, to construct a system you can call “my backbone”; it requires leaving behind the comfort of the Cancer South Node (“I feel and I wait”) and accepting a mature, adult form.
How do I find my True Node?#
We will soon be releasing a special True Node Calculator tool on Astroappy. Until then, you can cast your chart on our Birth Chart Calculator page and locate the North Node symbol (☊). Your date, time, and place of birth are crucial here; if you do not know your birth time, the safest way is to confirm it with elder family members or check official records. Just like the Ascendant, the nodal placements can be affected by a difference of a few hours. If you do not know your exact birth time, you can still cast your chart to gain a basic idea; afterward, you can perform a more precise study using our Ascendant Sign Calculator and Birth Chart pages.
The logic of the “North–South” axis: Where do I come from, where am I going?#
The Nodes are not read in isolation; axis must be understood as a whole. Your South Node is usually about the things you are “naturally good at,” your ingrained habits, your automatic patterns of behavior. It makes you feel safe, yet sometimes traps you in the same cycle. The North side, on the other hand, opens a gateway of intention to break this cycle.
Imagine this: In the South, you’re a born musician; your ear, your rhythm, your technical skill are all natural. But in the North it says “take the stage, engage in dialogue with the audience, lead within a polyphonic team.” Even if you’re technical, you need to learn to perform on stage. At your first concerts, your knees may tremble. Yet growth happens preciselythere: outside your comfort zone.
Interpreting the True Node through signs and houses#
Instead of memorizing sign–house combinations through long lists, let me give you the essence of it. Your True Node in each sign wants a new character muscle; in each house it wants a new life-area muscle. Below, we’ll anchor the logic with a few examples; then you can apply it to your own chart.
Sample zodiac aspects (brief yet to the point):#
- Gemini North Node – Sagittarius South Node: Learning not just to preach what you know, but to stay curious and ask questions, to embrace multiple perspectives instead of a single “truth,” to exchange ideas and build connections with your immediate environment. You already carry the big picture (Sagittarius); as you cultivate detail and dialogue (Gemini), life begins to open up.
- Capricorn North Node – Cancer South Node: Stepping out of the realm of belonging and emotional security into building structures, setting goals, maturing, setting boundaries, making things concrete. You already possess compassion; backbone and discipline are the keys to your growth.
- Aries North Node – Libra South Node: Shifting from always asking “what do we say?” to “what do I want?”. Daring to take initiative, to try leadership, to internalize courage. You already have the gift of harmony; cultivate your ability to take initiative.
- Libra North Node – Aries South Node: Moving from me–me–me to “us,” diplomacy, balance, forming partnerships. You already know courage; learn harmony.
- Aquarius North Node – Leo South Node: To step away from the stage and applause,to be of service to the collective, to seek social impact, equality, and shared ideals. Instead of shining,to help others shine is the path to try.
- Leo North Node – Aquarius South Node: Moving out of cold objectivity into heartfelt expression, creative risk, stepping into the spotlight. From “I am an extraordinary fragment” to “I am an authentic self.”
- Virgo North Node – Pisces South Node: From boundless empathy and intuition, toward grounding, simplification, service, and practical order. The spirit is lofty; let it meet the earth.
- Pisces North – Virgo South: From excessive analysis and control, to surrender, compassion, and flow practices. The mind is strong; let the heart soften.
Imagine these patterns combined with house placements. For example, Aquarius North Node in the 11th house: Leadership within communities, networking, project-based partnerships. Aquarius North Node in the 4th house: Unconventional family patterns, building a free-spirited home, creating an egalitarian structure in the emotional realm. Same sign, different house = the same “how,” but a different “where.”
Houses: The Stage of Growth#
Without turning the houses into long lists, let me share their main keys in terms of spiritual growth:
- 1st House North:Selfhood, identity, body, and direction. Establishing an axis from which you can say, “This is my name.”
- North Node in 4th House:Inner world, home, roots. Redefining what “home” means and building your own emotional security from within.
- North Node in 7th House:The relationship muscle. Learning the balance of “me and you,” forming partnerships, and seeking compromise.
- North Node in 10th House:The visible world, status, vocation. Giving a concrete answer to the question, “What do I want to be known for?”
- 2nd House North:Values and resources. Building solid ground through your own efforts, claiming the worth you truly deserve.
- North Node in 8th House:Sharing, transformation, the wisdom of crises. Managing “my resources and those of the other,” psychological depth.
- North Node in 5th House:Creativity, performance, joy. Taking risks, creating from the heart, bringing playfulness into life with childlike energy.
- North Node in the 11th House:Network, community, future goals. Learning to say, “I am not alone; together we are stronger.”
- 3rd House North:Communication, immediate environment, everyday learning. Bringing grand ideas down into concrete sentences; writing, speaking.
- North Node in 9th House:Faith, higher education, broadening horizons. Setting out on journeys, seeking meaning, teaching and learning.
- North Node in 6th House:Work, service, routines. Building purpose through sustainable habits, aligning body and mind.
- North Node in 12th House:Letting go, surrender, the inner spiritual realm. Finding strength in solitude, embracing the unseen.
The sign on this house in your chart adds the answer to the question “how.” For example, 6th house North + Virgo: discipline, simplification, service; 6th house North + Aries: establishing routines through initiative, a bold step toward personal responsibility.
Practical work with the True Node: Bring it into everyday life#
In theory the True Node is inspiring; but how does this translate into practice?
1) Small but consistent steps.
The North Node is like a “muscle”—it doesn’t develop overnight. For example, if your North Node is in Libra, consciously choose today to consider not only your own benefit but also the shared good when making a decision. Tomorrow, during a discussion, try speaking up once on behalf of the team. Next week, set up fair role-sharing within a project.
2) Transform the South side without disparaging it. See the talents in your South Node as “fuel.” If you have a Sagittarius South Node, you possess vision and a love of teaching. As you move toward your Gemini North Node, distill this vision into micro sentences; write blog posts, record short videos, and learn to ask questions.
3) Write a “statement of intention.”Reduce your North Node to a single sentence: “I am someone who is not afraid to take the stage in the realm of creative expression.” (Leo North Node – 5th house). Place this sentence on your desk and read it every day.
4) Daily–weekly ritual.Meditation, a short writing practice, mindful walking… Relate the ritual you chooseto your North Node theme,For example, if your North Node is in Aquarius, you might attend a community gathering once a week or volunteer for a civic project.
5) Consultation and follow-up. The Nodes are cyclical. A nodal return occurs approximately every 18–19 years; these periods function like a “course correction.” In addition, during the nodal opposition (around 9–10 years), the theme of “old cycle vs. new direction” comes to the forefront. As these dates approach, have your chart read again.
Eclipses, transits, and the “calling of life”#
Solar and lunar eclipses occur near the nodal axis. In other words, eclipse seasons are directly connected with your True Node theme. Eclipses sometimes speed up life so you can make a choice you have been postponing for years. A new job offer, an opportunity to move, turning points in relationships… At those moments when you say, “It’s as if the universe suddenly pushed a button,” your nodal axis may be powerfully at work.
In such times, the best thing you can do is to clarify your intention and take small, concrete steps. Remember: the North Node asks you for the “new”; but it is the steps you take that define what this “new” will be.
A sample reading: True Node in Gemini, 11th House#
Let us say my client’s North Node is in Gemini and in the 11th house. With the South Node on the Sagittarius–5th house axis, they are naturally a “big-picture storyteller,” someone who shines alone on stage, a visionary. Yet their area of growth is sharing the floor equally within a community and making knowledge accessible. I would suggest the following practices: initiating weekly knowledge-sharing sessions within their team, breaking complex concepts down into micro-content, and both receiving and offering mentoring. After a while, as they move from being the “sole hero” to becoming “part of the collective,” we see the blockages in their life begin to dissolve. Because this is precisely what the compass of their soul is calling them toward.
Misunderstandings: Fate or choice?#
“Is the True Node writing my destiny?” No; it is not writing your destiny, it is showing the direction. The North Node is a gateway to your potential. Whether you open that door, how far you wander inside, and what you turn into lasting habit is a choice. Therefore, when working with the nodes, be gentle with yourself, yet consistent. Struggling at first attempts does not mean “I did it wrong”; you are building muscle.
Warning about Mean Node and True Node#
In some applications, the default setting may be Mean Node. If you notice a difference in degrees on your chart, do not panic; simply select True Node in the options. When generating node analysis in Astroappy, the True Node will also be taken as the basis.
You’ve found the True Node in your chart; now what will you do?#
First, create a reading chart: sign, house, the other end of the axis. Then bring these three pieces of information together and write a single developmental sentence. For example:
“I, (Gemini–11th house), grow by turning knowledge into short, shareable formats and speaking with communities; I carry the vision (Sagittarius–5th house) from ‘a single stage’ to ‘a shared stage.’”
Break this sentence down into practical actions for daily life. For example: “one article–video per week,” “one community presentation per month,” “in every project meeting, bring out at least one person’s idea.” After a month or two, update the same sentence; you will see that the sentence matures along with you.
Internal links and paths for deeper exploration#
You are not alone when reading your True Node. Your entire chart accompanies you. Your Ascendant sign (that is, the gateway to your life path) accelerates your progress greatly when it aligns with your North Node theme. If you do not yet know your Ascendant, visit the Ascendant Sign Calculator page. Juno describes the recurring themes in relationships; when you combine your True Node with your Juno Sign readings, powerful insights arise about the “karmic path of love.” To see the foundation of all this, the Free Birth Chart Report is the best place to start.
Final word: the note of your soul is in your pocket#
The True Node is like a small yet powerful note written in your chart:
"Direction for your growth: this way."
Some days it’s easy to look in that direction; other times, stepping out of your comfort zone feels frightening. Yet whenever you take a step forward with courage, the universe responds. You notice people opening new doors for you, opportunities appearing that make you say, “this is exactly what I wanted,” and you feel a place within you quietly saying “yes.”
If you wish to unveil your karmic path, cast your chart now; True Node find its sign and house; note the opposite end of the axis. Write your sentence. Set out with small yet steady steps. I am here; when needed, we will read together, revise together, and let it grow together.
The stars are there to illuminate your path. Place this ancient compass of the heavens within your heart; the rest will unfold within you, step by step.
